-
Children’s Camp, 2011 What a week! So many activities:
- Everyone swimming every day at Governor Dodge State Park’s Cox Hollow & Twin Valley lakes, with Jess’s special swim instruction – good swimmers getting better and non-swimmers learning to swim;
- Hiking every day with Karen, Jess, Kacy and Jane into the Park along the bike path to Cox Hollow Lake, around Cox Hollow Lake, down into Lost Canyon and upstream to Stephen Falls and around Twin Valley Lake to the dark cave;
- Every morning learning and sharing ideas about cooperation, kindness, fairness and peace along with exploring the ideas of Aldo Leopold’s “Land Community” with Jane and Vince;
- Learning about our beautiful dark sky the first evening of camp with Gregory Erickson and John Wunderlin from the Iowa County Astronomy Club, viewing stars and a comet through telescopes;
- Learning about Archery with bow & arrow maker, Tom Boehm and shooting an occasional bull’s eye;
- Cooking samosas, chocolate chip cookies, and yummy vegetable soup with Chef Julie;
- Visiting our rock shelter and learning the ancient and natural history of the land with Gretchen & Dave;
- An evening at the farm with Becky, Tom, Elizabeth, Jeremiah our own camper – Keigan, going for horseback walks and a tractor hayride ending with a campfire, songs and lots of fun. Will we ever forget the Talking Challenge?
- Canoeing across Twin Valley Lake as part of the hike to the Dark Cave with Andrew, Dave, Kacy and Jess;
- Great beach games with Jess and Karen including balloons, shaving cream, and water bucket showers – Whee-ee-e!
- Great breakfasts and lunches by Gretchen and Julie and wonderful suppers by Tsu & Ley Phan who learned how to cook spaghetti and tacos for the first time;
- Loud and boisterous Spoons games with Andrew, Sha and Elisheva;
- Falling asleep in the dark and quiet (most of the time) bunkhouses, listening to the crickets, Bard Owls and Whip-poor-wills.
A super group of twelve campers, six boys and six girls, three Junior Counselors, seven full time staff, and eight part time staff with a wonderful ethnic mix and cultural diversity. In spite of three days of heat indexes well over a 100 degrees, Friendship Center’s 41st Children’s Camp was one of the best.
